Care and Feeding of Your Monster

If you’re interested, Franklin likes pot roast. He also likes potatoes, carrots, English peas, wheat rolls, and banana cream pie. For the first time in Boward family pot-roast history, there were no leftovers. We were barely able to save the plates.

He had seconds, and thirds, and whatever Orson didn’t finish, plus the fat and bones we were saving for the dogs. To be fair, he’d never had anything like it before. He’d also never had a family. More than anything, I think, he just didn’t want dinner to end.

“Wow! We’ve gotta put him in one of those hot dog–eating contests,” Stick said. “We’d make a fortune!”

Franklin seemed to have made a good impression on my brothers. Stick had already come up with a dozen ideas for making money off this enormous kid’s weirdness. Orson was just fascinated. It was as if some magnificent wild-thing had popped out of a storybook and stayed for dinner.

As for my sister, she hadn’t really warmed up to Bigfoot. Her groans grew louder with every plate he consumed, and she kept making comments like “Would you like some salt with your everything?”

At least Franklin had told her she smelled good. Things could have been worse.

But of all the reactions, the most surprising was Dad’s. I had prepared myself to repeat the introduction I’d made to the rest of the family since I didn’t think it was fair to spring Franklin on him all at once. But Dad walked in just as we were coming down for dinner.
